New World Shopping Center “May 1st” Family Charity Events

On May 1st, the New World shopping center on Nanjing Road held its “New World Celebrates May 1st Harmony Family Charity Party”.

At the event, Shanghai New World Co. Ltd donated 300,000 yuan to SCF to aid families in need. Fifteen families-in-need were invited, including those with disabilities, and 10 supporting families who frequently donate aid were invited. “New World Good-Hearted Family” awards were given to the 10 donating families and 500 yuan was given to each of the 25 participating families. SCF President Chen Tiedi, and Vice Presidents Ren Wenyan, Yuan Cai and Guo Kairong attended the event.

SCF to Receive Target International Grant on May 16, 2007

Shanghai Charity Foundation was chosen by the Target International Grant Program for its ongoing efforts to create positive, welcoming, learning environments that help young people become knowledgeable, productive citizens of the global community. The Target funding will support the SCF in building a children’s reading room at Shanghai Children’s Hospital, which will serve about 20,000 in-patient children per year.

Target is an important global presence, operating general merchandise discount stores and organizing grants and special programs. Since opening its first store in 1962, Target has partnered with nonprofit organizations, individuals and team members to help meet community needs. The Target International Grant Program awards grants around the world to organizations that are providing children and youth with accessible, quality educational opportunities.

Charity Work Booklet Published on May 18, 2007

On May 18th, China’s first practical guidebook to charity entitled “Charity Work Booklet”, edited and written by the SCF, was released by Shanghai Jingxiu Wenzhang Publishing Company and began distribution in Minhang District.

Well-known sociologist Deng Weizhi writes in the preface of the book, that the “Charity Work Booklet” includes basic knowledge about charity work and analysis of charity implementation. It should be a useful booklet for those interested in charity work. In the near future 8,000 booklets will be distributing through SCF’s branches to people in need.

CSS Holds Cultural Charity Bazaar on May 20, 2007

On May 20th the Consular Spouses Shanghai (CSS), supported by the diplomatic community and Shanghai government organizations, held a unique charity event at Yangtze Renaissance Shanghai Hotel. The CSS Cultural Charity Bazaar included international cultural performances and booths representing 40 countries.

The CSS was established in May 1996 and all diplomatic spouses and female consular officers are eligible to become members of the organization. At the 2006 Cultural Charity Bazaar, the CSS raised 664,000 yuan, which was later distributed to assist health and education projects for women and children in Shanghai and its’ surrounding provinces.

Sharp China Donates Funds to the Sharp SCF Special Foundation on May 24, 2007

Sharp China donated 1.05 million yuan to the SCF on May 24th toward developing their 2007 Sharp Special Foundation charity activities. Sharp China Chief Representative Sugano Nobuyuki and Kitty Xia from the SCF attended the donation ceremony.

Sharp China launched a Special Foundation named “Sharp Charity Foundation” in 2006, and the eight companies under Sharp China pledged to raise over 1 million yuan every year to develop its charity activities. Last year, Sharp Charity Foundation donated digital television sets to public hospitals, sponsored high school and primary school chess tournament programs in Shanghai, set up scholarships in universities to support education in China, and planted trees in eroded sandy areas.

Celebrating International Children’s Day, “Lighting Your Wishes” Congenital Heart Diseases Children’s Party on May 31, 2007

On May 31st, nearly 40 children recovering from congenital heart diseases gathered at the Shanghai Ocean Aquarium to attend a “Lightning Your Wishes” charity activity. Before the aquarium event, all the children went to Shanghai Children’s hospital and received a physical check-up and medical consultation free of charge. The doctors from the hospital wished to give these children good health as the best Children’s Festival gift, and then take them out for a fun day in the aquarium.

Starting from 2003, in partnership with Shanghai Children’s Health Foundation, Shanghai Children’s Hospital, and Shanghai Children’s Medical Center, SCF has provided pediatric operations for 81 needy children suffering from congenital heart disease.

SCF New Medical Cards Are Issued

Last September, the Shanghai Central Government announced a new medication policy for senior citizens in rural areas with no medication benefit system. Starting from April 3rd, the SCF has issued over 40,000 cards to residents over 60 years old in rural areas who are not covered by any social or medical benefit.

At the site of the launch ceremony, over 30 representatives for the senior citizens each received a medical card worth 500 yuan. Unlike the old benefit card system, this new system allows seniors to use their cards directly in SCF-designed hospitals.

Chen Tiedi, President of the SCF, Ren Wenyan, Vice President of the SCF, and Zhou Jianpin, member of the Council of the SCF, as well as other leaders attended the ceremony.

“Pujiang Real Estate Making Your Art Dreams Come True Charity Fund” Established

On April 8, Shanghai Pujiang Real Estate Company Ltd. donated 500,000 yuan to the SCF to form a special foundation entitled “Pujiang Real Estate Making Your Art Dreams Come True Charity Fund”. This is the first special foundation directed at youth completing their arts-related education since the establishment of the SCF. This fund will aid youth with talents in the arts who wish to learn and work in the field of art, but cannot afford art education.

Chinese Children Join the Festivities for Turkey’s Children’s Festival in Shanghai

On the occasion of Turkey's “23 April National Sovereignty and Children's Festival", the Consulate General of Turkey in Shanghai organized a children's party with the help of the Turkish community as well as the sponsorship of Turkish companies Turkish Airlines, GOLDAS Jewelry, and CIMTAS (Ningbo) Steel Processing.

This special event was celebrated in Shanghai at the China Welfare Institute Children’s Palace. Children from an orphanage in Shanghai and from the China Welfare Institute Children's Palace joined Turkish children and children from the Consulates General at the party. Along with many other activities, a talent show was held in which children performed singing and dancing and played instruments.

The festival originates from 23 April 1920, when the Turkish Grand National Assembly was founded and Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, founder of the Republic of Turkey, declared a "Children's Festival". Nowadays, April 23rd is celebrated as an International Children's Festival with ever-growing numbers of participating countries, including China. The week-long festival, which includes a parade and a gala dinner, is broadcast live, with children from all over the world representing their countries with their national costumes, dances and music.

The Annual Love Under the Sky 24-hour Event

On February 4th, the Shanghai Charity Foundation (SCF) held its annual Love Under the Sky 24-hour Event. The main theme of this year’s event was “Holds Hands for Charity and Create a Harmonious City”.

All day, the Shanghai residents became involved with charity through a variety of events, including: an opening ceremony at Zhongshan park, which attracted over 10,000 people, along with a free charity medical check-up at Zhongshan park, an charity auction at the Shanghai International Auction Center, a phone support system where people could donate to charity by calling, and a live telethon on Shanghai Television.

The Manulife-Sinochem Charity Week

On February 8th, Manulife-Sinochem invited 200 underprivileged children from Shanghai’s Qingpu, Jinshan and Songjiang districts, along with several disabled children from the Fengxian School for the Disabled, for a winter celebration party in the city of Sheshan.

During the opening ceremony, Lin Chongwen, the CEO of Manulife-Sinochem expressed his appreciation to the SCF saying, “It is great that an organization like the SCF exists so that we could give these children a chance to play and celebrate.”

Lin also expressed his appreciation to the Sheshan Le Meridian Hotel for providing a space for the children to play.

The 2007 Spring Festival Visit

This past Spring Festival, Chen Tiedi, the President of the SCF, along with several other representatives from the Foundation began a visit to underprivileged families in Shanghai and learn, first-hand, of the challenges they face.

During the tour, they visited Guo Yuanxing, a 71 year-old resident of Shanghai’s Baoshan district. Guo had been paralysed in bed for over 8 years and his wife, who is 67 year-old, was recently diagnosed with heart disease.

Moved by their plight, Chen Tiedi and the SCF representatives presented the couple with a hongbao of 2,000 yuan and promised further aid.

The 2007 Disabled and Orphaned Children’s Spring Festival Celebration

On February 16th, more than 40 spouses of Shanghai’s top government officials visited to the Shanghai’s Children Home to celebrate Spring Festival with over 200 underprivileged children. Festivities included an afternoon of interactive play and a traditional Chinese dinner with presents for the children.

This year’s celebration was organized by the SCF, the Shanghai Women’s Association, and Amway China.

The 2007 Amway Concert for the New Year

On New Year’s Eve 2007, Chen Xianyang, the award-winning conductor, along with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, performed at the Shanghai Grand Theater to celebrate the 2007 Amway Concert for the New Year. In front of a crowd of hundreds, Song Yiqiao, Vice President at the Shanghai Charity Foundation (SCF), presented a certificate of honor to Amway in order to thank them for their efforts to help Shanghai’s underprivileged through charity over the past year.

The event was jointly organized by the SCF, Amway, and the Xinmin Evening News.

The Sound of Love New Year’s Charity Concert Ticket Auction

On January 10th, Bund Garden organized an auction of 10 pairs of concert tickets, valued at 2,500 yuan each, for their Sound of Love Charity Concert in order to help underprivileged students finish their education. Bidding on each set began with an asking price of 5,000 yuan.

All ticket and auction income will be donated to the SCF.

Donation from the Spouse of the German Consul General

Silvia Kettelhut, spouse of the German Consul General to Shanghai, donated 120,000 yuan to the SCF to help three children, one from China’s Anhui Province, one from China’s Jiangsu Province, and one from Shanghai’s Nanhui District, so that the first two children could receive surgery for congenital heart conditions and the last child could receive treatment for leukemia. At the end of last year, Kettelhut left Shanghai with her husband, and it was her wish to make one last donation to help China’s underprivileged before they left.

Silvia had lived in Shanghai for four years and since 2005, had been involved in over 30 different projects for charity, raising over 1.5 million yuan through her work.

Shanghai Doctors for Charity Deliver Free Medication to Suburban Areas

The Shanghai Doctors for Charity Volunteer Corps sent 20 teams of doctors to Shanghai’s outlying districts and areas, including Pudong, Hongkou, Baoshan, Qingpu, Chongming Island, Songjiang, Nanhui and Fengxian, on January 20th and 27th in order to treat and prescribe free medicine for Shanghai’s underprivileged. Doctors from over 20 hospitals, including Huadong, Huashan, Yueyang, Tongji, Renji and Shanghai Children’s Hospital participated in the activity.

On the morning of January 20th, 11 doctors from 7 departments of Shanghai Xiong Ke Hospital also visited Jiading’s Anting Hospital, to contribute their time and effort to provide free medical care for Jiading’s underprivileged citizens.

The SCF and the Japanese Businesswomen’s Club Visits the Xinxin Migrant Worker’s School

Members of the SCF and the Japanese Businesswoman’s Club visited over 800 children of migrant workers from Sichuan, Anhui, Jiangsu and China’s Dongbei region at the Xinxin Migrant Worker’s School. The club donated over 100,000 yuan to the SCF, a portion of which was used to add 16 computers to the school’s facilities.
